Background

The management of tailings dams is a critical issue for the mining industry, with significant implications for environmental and social sustainability. This panel discussion will bring together regulators and industry experts from selected countries to share best practices and compare national regulations and standards for tailings dam management.

The discussion will provide a unique opportunity for countries to learn from each other’s experiences and approaches to tailings dam regulation, and to identify opportunities for harmonization and improvement. Panelists will discuss their respective countries’ regulatory frameworks, standards, and guidelines for tailings dam design, construction, operation, and closure.

The panel discussion will focus on the following themes: regulatory frameworks and standards, risk management and assessment, and industry best practices and innovations. Countries represented on the panel include Australia, Canada, Chile, South Africa, and Zambia.

Speaker name: Murtala Touray, Africa Programmes Director, United Kingdom

Murtala Touray is the Programmes Director of Greenpeace Africa. Murtala has diverse background having worked in the public and private sector as well as the humanitarian space promoting and defending human rights alongside peace and security across Africa. Murtala has worked with intergovernmental organisations including the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He is a former Rotary World Peace Fellow from the University of Bradford, specialising in African peace and conflict studies as well as project management with focus on how the NGO sector manages benefits of projects.
